How to Play Curio With Your Partner (Step-by-Step Guide)

The complete walkthrough: room setup, modes explained, and tips for your first game night on Curio.

Curio is a free two-player game in your browser — you answer prompts, guess each other's picks, and chat in the same private room. No account, no app store. This guide shows how to play Curio with your partner from first link to first round in about two minutes.

What you need

  • Any modern browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge)
  • Two devices — or share one phone if you are on the same couch
  • A way to send a link (text, WhatsApp, DM, email)

Step 1: Create a room

Go to curioroom.net. Choose a mode:

  • Stranger — 9 rounds, lighter prompts. Good for new friends or low-key hangs.
  • Duo — 12 rounds with deeper questions and extra round types when you are both moving fast. Best for couples and close partners.

Tap Create Room. You land in the lobby as Player 1 (host).

Step 2: Share the invite link

Copy the invite link from the lobby and send it to your partner. They open it on their phone or laptop — no install step. Alternatively they can enter your six-letter room code on the home page.

Tip: Text "open this and tap I'm ready" instead of explaining rules. The lobby guides them.

Step 3: Pick nicknames and avatars

Both players choose an avatar emoji and a nickname. When you are set, tap I'm ready. The host sees when both players are ready and can start the game.

Step 4: Play rounds

Each round gives a prompt — poll, this-or-that, sync pick, or similar. You answer privately, then guess what your partner chose. Points reward alignment; the real fun is reactions in chat.

Chat unlocks when both players are in the room. Use it for trash talk, inside jokes, or debrief after a surprising answer.

Step 5: Finish and rematch

After the final round you see scores and highlights. Want another run? Vote rematch — Duo mode can deepen prompts on repeat plays if you are both still engaged.

Stranger vs Duo — which should couples pick?

Most couples choose Duo for date night. Pick Stranger if it is early days and you want to keep things breezy. Full comparison on our how it works page.

Long distance setup

Stay on FaceTime or WhatsApp video while each person plays on their own device. Curio handles private answers — you only see guesses and reveals. More LDR ideas: long distance couple games.

Common questions

Does it cost money?

No. Two players, one room, free.

Do we need accounts?

No. A session token keeps you in the room if you refresh — save the link if you step away.

Can we play on phone and laptop mixed?

Yes. That is how most people play.

What if chat feels quiet?

First round breaks the ice. If you want warm-up prompts beforehand, skim our conversation starters.

Is it like truth or dare?

Some rounds feel similar but structured — no random dares. See truth or dare alternatives for why couples prefer it.
